Astronomers have witnessed a black hole tearing apart and consuming a massive star, resulting in one of the most powerful cosmic events ever recorded. This rare phenomenon, known as a Luminous Fast Blue Optical Transient (LFBOT), was observed using the Zwicky Transient Facility at Palomar Observatory and other telescopes.
The event, designated AT2024wpp and nicknamed the Whippet, was first identified by Anna Ho from Cornell University. The black hole's immense gravity shredded the star into a disk, which then fed the black hole. The energy released was approximately 400 billion times that of the Sun, surpassing known supernovae.
Further studies revealed a shock wave traveling through surrounding gas at one-fifth the speed of light. This shock wave eventually fizzled out after reaching a boundary created by gas expelled by the star before its destruction. The event also produced X-ray radiation and a powerful wind of gas.
Interestingly, observations from Keck Observatory and others showed weak signatures of hydrogen and helium gas emerging after the explosion. This suggests that a structure may have survived the initial blast, possibly a stream of material from the star's core or a third object in the system.
The findings, presented at the AAS conference, provide insights into black hole behavior and star destruction. They also offer a new method to identify and study black holes, as well as the physics behind these extraordinary events.
