Isolated Populations Have Less Genetic Diversity but Richer Languages, Global Study Finds

Pairing global genetic and linguistic datasets, researchers found migration makes genes diverse but languages alike, while isolation does the opposite — explaining hotspots like New Guinea and the Himalayas.

Regions of the world where people have long been genetically isolated tend to harbour the most structurally diverse languages, while regions shaped by migration and mixing have languages that are more alike, according to a study published on May 1, 2026, in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). The research, led by linguist Anna Graff of the University of Zurich, uncovered a robust inverse relationship between human genetic diversity and diversity in language structure across the globe.

The finding may seem counterintuitive: regions with more migration and mixing have higher genetic diversity, so their languages might be expected to vary more too. Instead, the team found the reverse. To identify the pattern, the study combined large-scale genetic and linguistic datasets, comparing genetic variation among individuals with structural variation among languages in each region. The analysis accounted for geographic closeness, population density, environmental conditions and deep population history, including the timing of continental settlement.

"Contact increases genetic diversity, but it also promotes the spread of linguistic features, making languages more similar," explained Chiara Barbieri, senior author and population geneticist at the University of Cagliari. "Isolation, by contrast, limits genetic diversity while allowing languages to evolve independently."

The pattern helps explain why genetically isolated regions such as New Guinea and the Himalayas show exceptional variety in how their languages are structured. Balthasar Bickel, senior author and director of the Institute for the Interdisciplinary Study of Language Evolution at the University of Zurich, said such hotspots preserve a wider range of ways of organizing grammar, sound and meaning — a range reduced elsewhere by long histories of contact. Graff summed up the principle: the same processes that keep populations apart allow languages to grow apart as well.
