Russian Drugmaker and AI Lab Team Up on Alzheimer's Antibody That Can Cross the Blood-Brain Barrier
R-Pharm and the AI Research Institute (AIRI) are using AI to design Alzheimer's antibodies able to cross the blood-brain barrier, a preclinical project aimed mainly at cutting years off drug development.
Russian drugmaker R-Pharm and the AI Research Institute (AIRI) are using AI models to develop therapeutic antibodies for Alzheimer's disease, with the project's central challenge being how to get the drug past the , the brain's natural protective shield that blocks most existing medicines. The project is currently at the .
"The main scientific goal of the project is not target discovery but overcoming the barrier," said Artur Kadurin, director of AIRI's AI drug development centre. The researchers are building a system to modify antibodies so they can cross into the brain; if the approach works, the companies say the technology could be extended to other classes of central nervous system drugs.
Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative condition in which brain cells gradually break down, causing memory loss and cognitive decline, and no effective therapy currently exists; one of the main challenges is delivering drugs to nerve cells at all. R-Pharm noted that developing such drugs typically takes around 10 years.
The companies expect AI to mainly save time rather than cost: reducing development timelines by even six months over a 10-year horizon would already be a "wow effect," and a 10-15% acceleration from the current 10-to-15-year timeline could be a major breakthrough. R-Pharm and AIRI have worked on neurodegenerative brain disease drugs together since 2025, and AIRI has been developing its own AI models for drug discovery for about five years, including a protein-structure modeling platform called AF Toolkit that the institute compares to Google DeepMind's AlphaFold.
The process cannot yet be fully automated: the AI models do not work from a simple text prompt, and a domain expert and an AI specialist must work together to get a usable result.
